Lean on your spirituality.

Most people have a spiritual identity. For some, it is rooted in their childhood family traditions or formal education in an established church. For others, their feelings regarding religion are more loosely defined.

If you find yourself in a position where you want to find peace and relaxation after a particularly stressful day, consider revisiting your spiritual or religious beliefs. It can take many forms based on your life experiences. A common way for many to relax under the umbrella of their belief system is to incorporate bible readings into their day. One example is to consider the question, “What is tribulation?” and see where the content takes you. Finding peace and meaning in your beliefs is a calming way to spend time when you need to unwind.

Spend time with an animal.

Animals have an amazing ability to calm people. They need love and attention and give it back without complication. If you have a pet and are having a rough day, sit down and be with them. Give them pets and belly rubs or brush their hair. Sometimes a good cuddle on the couch will do the trick. Even tending to their basic needs, such as a walk or training time, will do you good because you are focusing on something else outside of your own issues.

If you do not have a furry friend in your life, there is always the internet to turn to. Watching happy animal videos like this one will always put a smile on your face.

Call someone special.

Picking up the phone or pulling it out of your pocket and then dialling a number versus sending a text may seem unusual in this age of rapid-fire texting, but you should give it a try anyway. Making a connection with someone you enjoy talking with is a happy and heartwarming experience that should never be overlooked or taken for granted. Hearing the voice of a beloved friend or family member is soothing and cathartic. It evokes happy memories from your shared past, which is why people, when they get hearing aids, are often emotional in the difference it makes.

In all likelihood, the person you call will be pleasantly surprised that you called since it is not as common anymore. Try not to be nervous; you will probably pick right up where you left off after a few pleasantries. Once the conversation is over, if you feel good about the call, make a mental note to keep connecting with this person and others in this manner to help reconnect and relax.

Go ahead and try one or all of these ideas on how to help you relax and destress at the end of a difficult day or whenever you need to take it easy. There are a lot of resources available. Find what works best for you.
