Why is it that most goals are never achieved? For many setting a goal appears to be the end result however goals need to be acted upon every day. These seven steps, if applied conscientiously, will help you achieve your goals.
How many times have you heard that being successful is all down to setting goals? It may come as no surprise to you to learn there is a lot more to success than just setting your goals. However hard they may be, it gives you focus and achievement when you succeed.
Most of us, at some time, have been told that an essential part, if not the major part, of being successful is setting goals. If that were true many more of us would be successful millionaires, actors, parents…etc. In this article, I show you how you can achieve your goals.
1) What is a goal?
A goal is a target you have set yourself, and it’s more than a desire or a need. It’s not a wish, a wish would be I wish to win the lottery, but it’s not something you can set yourself to do as you don’t have much control over achieving that. A goal is a desire to end up at, which can be controlled by the actions you take, the elements you put into your life, and your desire to get to that goal.
2) How to set a goal?
You need to break down your goal into a process that you can work through to get to that point. Break it down into small individual steps or actions, make these achievable at each one, so you don’t get disheartened along the way on trying to get to your goal. Long-term goals are achieved by small steps, then medium steps and finally getting to the long-term goal.
3) What actions are required?
I find actually taking to pen and paper really important when setting goals and working through the actions that need to be taken. You can brain dump through the process of what needs to be done to get to those goals. You will notice how those small goals are met along the way to achieving your goals.
4) Analyse the results
Then when you have set your goals, both short-term and long-term goals, then work out in detail how you are going to accomplish each individual goal. Write down a detailed plan of what tangible actions are required to achieve each goal.
These then become short-term goals, leading to major longer-term goals.
5) What steps do I need to take today?
Ask yourself ‘What steps do I need to take today?’ using your writing plans to help you work out what needs to be done. Check-in each day to see if there is something you can do to help this be achieved.
Display your goals in what way you want. What way do you work best? Do you love to see them in front of you? Or are you OK with digital goal setting versions of them? Make them look lovely if this is what pleases you.
6) Review your achievements every week and month
Each week review your progress, see what you have achieved this week, and anything you may have missed. You can adjust your plan along the way to make it harder or easier to achieve your goals.
7) What if things go wrong?
If goals were easy to achieve everyone would be millionaires or be always succeeding in achieving their goals and wants in life. Goals are tricky as they push you outside your comfort zone to do new things. To achieve your goals, you have to face up to failure and take more risks. There will be setbacks, but that’s OK. You just need to learn from them and adjust your plant along the way.
True success comes from the daily actions we all take, and using your goals and actions to move you forward however quickly or slowly that means.
